LEAD’s Sustainability Projects at Western!

The LEAD Student Sustainability Coordinators (MEM & undergrads) would once again like to promote undergrad engagement in campus sustainability.  This semester’s team includes: Katie Riesberg, Merin Tillett, Chloe McComas, Ellie Jeffrey, Campbell Mixon, Alyvia Sornberger, Megan Yost, Francis Toohey IV, and Paige Kempker & Etinosa, both MEM mentors! Take a look below at all of the cool things LEAD has been up to!

Sustainability Tours

To provide faculty and staff the opportunity to get their students interested in sustainability on (and off) campus, LEAD coordinators continue to make themselves available to classes to lead walking tours of campus and discussions about sustainability as it relates to college living and more! The coordinators have worked hard to designed a series of discussion-based tours that include highlighting campus sustainability efforts currently established or underway on campus, opportunities to advance student engagement, and ideas for action in this community.

Zero-Waste Kits

Are you planning an event and want to provide some food? Consider utilizing the free Zero-Waste Kits provided by LEAD Sustainability! The Zero-Waste Kits are reusable dish kits that you can reserve by filling out this simple form. We can generally accommodate groups of up to 100 (plates, bowls utensils & cups) and we even have some hot drink mugs, too! Or, depending on what you are serving, we might be able to provide you with compostable boats that can go directly into the Rocket Composter. This program aims to reduce the waste produced at Western, so if you have any questions, email leadsustainability@western.edu.

Sustainability Fund

Students aiming to make positive sustainable changes on our campus are encouraged to apply for the Sustainability Fund! The Sustainability Fund accepts diverse ideas, but funding is only available to full-time undergraduate students. Learn more and apply at: https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=nyf2DoKg50-3pEeRye1tHA66ixgc1glBoGKDbHXA825UQlNPQ0NBQ0gwN09EOFhZSzYwMVU0SDdTRi4u&web=1&wdLOR=c84FF532C-2FA3-3844-B0D8-2DB2ABA7DA43. Previous Sustainability Fund projects have included: water bottle fill stations, the bike library, the forest garden, recycling bins, and Chipeta Gardens projects. If you have any questions email sphillips@western.edu.

FreeCycle

FreeCycle is located in the basement of Ute Hall. It’s open from 2-5 pm, Monday-Friday. We are always looking for donations, so please think of us next time you are doing a deep clean. Students especially appreciate kitchen items, décor & anything they can wear for Gaper Day or Halloween. If you have any questions, email leadsustainability@western.edu.

And, if students need volunteer hours for any classes, we are always looking for students to help with campus composting, FreeCycle, and zero waste initiatives. FreeCycle is open M-f from 2-5 pm!

Finally, if you have read this far, stay tuned for upcoming events such as our Sew Sesh series, which teaches folks like you and me basic sewing skills and how to fix zippers & buttons, apply patches, knit, etc. And, mark your calendars for April 22. It is Earth Day/SpringFest combined and we are planning an awesome BBQ with live music! Follow leadsustainability on IG to learn more!

Thanks for supporting student-driving sustainability initiatives on campus.
